BMC Mend Our Mountains - Sept
I recently had the pleasure of helping host a BMC Mend Our Mountains event in Eryri National Park. This important campaign raises funds to repair and protect paths in the UK’s upland areas.
On our first day, was spent on Yr Wyddfa. We scattered cairns along the Watkins path. When people build cairns it involves moving rocks from their natural place. This can disturb plants and small creatures that live under or around those stones. It also piles up the stone in one place leading to erosion in the areas that have been left bare.
The second day, we worked in the stunning Ogwen Valley. Our main task was building a flagstone path. This helps reduce erosion and keeps walkers on a clear, durable route. Laying each stone took teamwork, but seeing the finished path was very rewarding.
Taking part in Mend Our Mountains lets us give back to the places we love. It was hard work but great fun, and I’m proud to have helped maintain these iconic paths for everyone to enjoy.
